Why I Play MMOs

It can be mystifying how a type of game whose reputation has been so thoroughly shat on for over a decade can still be home to so many passionate fans. Even among hardcore gamers, who themselves exist on the outskirts of the mainstream, MMOs have been relegated to the bottom of gaming's totem pole. These Massively communities have been a part of their own independent social ghettos since the late 90s as a collective that no one on the outside, not even similarly minded players, seem to really understand.

So why the hell have I been a card-carrying member since I was old enough to...

From Advanced Warfighter to Future Soldier

GRAW spawned a well-received sequel in 2007, but since then the franchise has been on leave of absence. After postponing the release date several times, Ubisoft has declared that the next entry in the series, Future Soldier, will finally be released on May 25. With the successors to the 360 and PS3 seemingly due to be announced any day now, and having played a hefty chunk of Future Soldier myself, I thought it might be interesting to directly contrast the two games - to explore the changes in design, changes that reflect how shooters have evolved across this generation, and to look to what...

Press X to kiss wife – why developers can't do romance

Heavy Rain

The biggest mystery in Heavy Rain isn't the identity of the Origami Killer – it's the answer to the question "What the hell is going on in the head of Madison Paige?".

Madison is ostensibly a photojournalist, but we never really see her writing or taking pictures. More bizarre than that is the fact that once she stumbles across a genuine, bona fide scoop – fugitive danger-Dad Ethan Mars – she immediately falls in love with him. I understand that she's suffering from insomnia (according to a swiftly-abandoned subplot) and so her judgement...

Heads-up: New games out this week (February 17)

Recommended: UFC Undisputed 3 - Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

THQ has taken its time with UFC 3, having given the series a break in 2011 to ensure the game's quality. The third game includes Pride, a more violent version of MMA that allows for extremely brutal combat. We reckon UFC 3 has been worth the wait - look out for our full review tomorrow.

Worth a look

Tekken 3D: Prime Edition might face an uphill struggle to sell, but early impressions are that it's a competent fighter although a bit slim on content. It's also got the terrible CGI movie...

I'm pretty much playing something on the Vita every night at the moment, and the latest game to get a look in is Sony's third-person close-to-launch shooter Unit 13. I'm not going to divulge my opinion just yet, but the way in which the game is designed for a portal device is very interesting. Missions are displayed on a big grid and each is rated in terms of difficulty and length - something that is important when you're considering if you've got enough time to finish something in your 30-minute commute. As a side note, it's brilliant to finally have dual analogue sticks on a handheld....

The VideoGamer.com Podcast: Episode 31

I've been dragged away from League of Legends to write this blurb, and all I can do right now is think about how much I want to be playing League of Legends. It's probably got over 31 different champions in it. But we're not here to talk about League of Legends this week, and instead the discussion must be focused on the very freshest video game news and the most visceral banter of the latest releases - or your money back!*

The congenial Neon Kelly hosts, and is joined by both an excessively astringent Martin Gaston and a particularly sententious Tom Orry. Still, what else is...

Mess Affect: Reception - A Mass Effect fan fiction

Mess Affect: Reception by Neon Kelly

Chapter 1

It was April 2084, and Colonel Shepherd was a worried man (or woman). At 22 he was the youngest space-officer in the galaxy. He had a hard-earned reputation, a loyal crew, and a high-tech ship - the USS Normany. This was a great privilege, because the Normany was equipped with a Mess Affect Drive, which allowed it to fly through all kinds of space - and even go back in time.

But Lieutenant Shapard was indeed a worried man. He knew The Reepers were coming, and no-one except his team would believe...

Heads-up: New games out this week (February 10)

Worth a look

It's going to be pretty busy on store shelves this week, with a decent handful of new releases to pick from. The lascivious Catherine is the most interesting release, but also likely to be the most divisive. More welcoming to the masses are EA's Grand Slam Tennis 2 and SEGA's sports compendium Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games for the 3DS.

Elsewhere 2K releases the follow-up to the comic-book action title The Darkness, offering some of the most brutal and gory combat we've seen in a long time. EA, on the back of a well-received...

I started a three-month PlayStation Plus membership this week to see what it offered and one of the freebies was Hungry Giraffe, a PS Mini that also works on PS3 complete with higher quality artwork. Essentially it's one of those endless running games, except you're moving upwards instead of across the screen, you're not running but are instead a giraffe's head on the end of what I assume is an elasticised neck, and you must eat items in order to continue to propel yourself upwards. As is the way with these score-based titles, one go quickly turns into numerous attempts and before too long...

Emily's Star Wars The Old Republic Diary: Not another MMO

Every few weeks I get somebody asking me if I'm still playing that terrible Star Wars game, so I'm used to the look of blank despair I get when I say I'm actually playing a pretty good Star Wars game. The kind of scepticism that has been banging through the hallowed halls of the Internet hasn't been unwarranted, though. On paper what BioWare has made is an MMO that fills a hole absolutely no-one in the MMO community was asking to be filled – a single-player-driven MMO that only awkwardly supports group play outside of its Flashpoints and Operations. I've gone over my feelings of grouping...

Why World of Warcraft isn't getting a facelift any time soon

Many believed this was evidence that Blizzard was preparing a full character re-design, but whether or not there's any truth in it doesn't really matter. Because the result now is a 19-page letter to the devs from a small army of users demanding updated character models.

If you've been lurking on the Blizzard forums lately you've probably noticed some of this discussion come to a rolling boil, based on the odd state of WoW's models at present. After a couple expansion packs which rolled out some of the newer races, the game now has a hodge-podge of new and old, of models with...

Recommended

The new releases are finally arriving at something faster than a snail's pace, with three titles worth of consideration this week. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is our pick of the bunch, if only for the superb Snake Eater. Final Fantasy XIII-2 appears to be an improvement on the previous entry in the series, and you can look out for our Soulcalibur 5 review on Tuesday morning.

Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection - Xbox 360 and PS3Final Fantasy XIII-2 - Xbox 360 and PS3Soulcalibur V - Xbox 360 and PS3

Worth a look

We're going...

What We're Playing January 29, 2012

I've been off work all week with a bad back (jumped into the road to save a kitten if you must know), but I've been able to play a little bit of Little Deviants on Vita. All consoles seem to require a mini-game collection at launch, and this is what Vita users will have on February 22. The problem with games like this, released at £19.99, is that it offers the exact kind of experience common on Apple's App Store. While Deviants is priced in the budget category of Vita titles, its price tag is extortionate when compared to the top prices paid for iOS games. Sony should be developing...

Is BioWare becoming crass?

McCullough came and went as yet another pawn in the often stunningly surreal fight against video games, but for BioWare the drama only helped solidify its status as a broad-minded developer.

The consensus online was that the content in the game - the hard-line focus on morality, choice, and in this case specifically, sexuality - hinted at a growing maturity in the genre. This was repeated by the man in charge. Responding to the situation, BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk explained how the sex cut-scenes were used to create a sophisticated experience:

"I think from our...

Why I can never forgive Final Fantasy X-2

An audience watches on as a young woman appears on stage. As the spotlight reveals her to be Yuna, the shy but brave young heroine who saved the whole world from oppression and suffering two years before, they cheer in delight. Yuna takes a few steps forward before gracefully turning on her heels.

Her striking Eastern dress - adorned with images of the hibiscus flower with which she shares her name, and evocative of her faith in the humanitarian principles which helped her to lead by example - simply fades into nothingness in the midst of a delicate twirl. Threads of...

The VideoGamer.com Podcast: Episode 29

Today's show is missing Pearson who has inexplicably decided to escape English weather by going to Ireland. In his place is Neon Kelly, taking the reigns of the podcast, along with Martin Gaston and Emily Gera for the last podcast of the month.

Stories discussed in today's show:

00.06.05 Is it so wrong to love a two-legged giraffe? We start the show with some solid talk about the recent Resident Evil 6 reveal trailer, and the very sordid logo.00.21.25 You can play WoW on your telephone now, apparently. Finally, another way to avoid talking to people on train commutes....

What is Project Titan? Everything we know

It will feature in-game advertising: A new job listing has found its way to Blizzard's official recruitment page this week, hiring a franchise development producer. The listing confirms the company is looking to find someone who can "work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment's next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience," suggesting the MMO will feature in-game adverts.

What this means: It's already being rumoured that this might hint at a present-day setting for the game, although it's worth...

Worth a look

We're still finalising our opinion on the first story-driven Resident Evil game since 5 released three years ago, but early word on the games media street is that it's pretty good. Martin will be delivering his verdict later in the week, but if you want an early look at the game you can now download a demo from the 3DS eShop. The Circle Pad Pro also hits stores this week and appears to be the ideal way to play Revelations.

Resident Evil: Revelations - 3DS

The fact that the Vita version of ModNation Racers lets you access all the user-created content made by the PlayStation 3 community is brilliant. From day one you'll have absolutely loads of really quite decent tracks, mods and karts to choose from. A lot of them will be a bit rubbish, put together by people messing about with the tools, but the rating and filtering systems mean these aren't hard to avoid. As a launch title without online play ModNation Racers Road Trip might struggle against the gorgeous looking WipEout 2048, but if content is king then this Kart racer deserves to do...
